Forgiving Medical Debt For Those In Need
On behalf of a client I recently discovered this program. Since Legacy is a not-for-profit health care provider, they have a program to forgive medical debt to those in need. If household income is below 300% of the federal poverty level and no substantial assets exist, then 100% of the medical bill will be forgiven. That means for a single person who earns less than $35,000 per year they will NOT have to pay any medical bills to Legacy. Of course you have to ask for it. For our client we made the request even after Legacy’s collection agency had filed a lawsuit to collect the debt – they agreed to dismiss the lawsuit without any payment. So, precisely those people whose income makes it difficult to afford health insurance have one more tool to avoid financial catastrophe.
