Michael D. O’Brien

Portland bankruptcy attorney and asset protection lawyer Michael D. O’Brien is the Managing Partner of Michael D. O’Brien & Associates, P.C. and is dedicated to a process of understanding client goals and crafting legal strategies to achieve those goals with minimal risk and surprise. Although born in Seattle, Mike has been an Oregon resident since he was three months old. Mike graduated from Wilson High School in 1986 and then attended the University of Oregon where in 1991 he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree with a major in History. In 1994, Mike earned his Doctor of Law degree from the University of Wisconsin Law School.

Mike’s practice focuses on debt solutions for individuals and small business owners.  Frequently that solution involves a Chapter 7 or Chapter 13 cases but also could include civil defense of a collection case and debt negotiation/settlement.  Mike also represents individuals and small business owners in Chapter 11 reorganization proceedings.

In 2007, Mike received Board Certification as a Consumer Bankruptcy Specialist by the American Board of Certification.  He is one of only three attorneys in the State of Oregon with such certification (Mr. Piteo is one of other two!).  He is an active member of the Oregon State Bar Debtor/Creditor section and regularly donates his time and services to the Legal Aid Pro Bono Bankruptcy Clinic.

Personal Interests

Mike and his wife Cheri have been married for 21 years and they have four children and two grandchildren. Mike collects First Edition Science Fiction novels and dabbles in Amateur Astronomy. He and Cheri are avid concert goers and frequently attend country music festivals around the Northwest. Soon to become empty nesters, Mike looks forward to spending more time with Astronomy, boot-stomping music and reading.

Theodore J. Piteo

Theodore J. Piteo hails from the east coast, born in Chicago and raised in Kent, Ohio. He attended the Ohio State University Honors College where he received his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration and Computer Science.

Ted entered Lewis and Clark Law School in 2005 to pursue a legal career and clerked under Legal Aid Clinic Director, Dick Slottee, before earning his Juris Doctorate in 2008. Today, Ted actively participates in the bankruptcy community both as a Local Rules Committee Member and as a volunteer for the Legal Aid Society of Oregon’s Bankruptcy Clinic. Ted’s practice focuses on Debt Litigation and Chapter 7 , Chapter 11, and Chapter 13 cases for both consumers and small businesses. He has presented CLE classes on Bankruptcy Law and Divorce and is an avid participant in the Oregon State Bar Debtor/Creditor Section. Ted is admitted to practice in Portland, Oregon and Ohio.

Ted lives with his anthropologist/yogini wife Kate and their two cats. When you can find Ted in town he is brewing batches of Microbrew beer and tending his garden. More often, when work is done, he is outdoor-bound by bicycle or car to backpack a trail or ski a mountain with the goal of exploring all the nooks and crannies his new home has to offer.
